Residual Solvents, Volatiles & Unknown Identification

What is GC-MS Analysis?

Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) combines gas chromatographic separation with mass spectrometric detection for high-resolution analysis of volatile and semi-volatile organics. Compounds are vaporized, separated on a capillary column, ionized, and fragmented to produce unique mass spectra for identification and quantification.

Key strengths: Excellent sensitivity (ppb–ppt range), structural information from fragmentation patterns, and large databases for reliable unknown matching – making GC-MS the gold standard for volatiles.

Key Applications of Our GC-MS Analysis

  • Pharmaceuticals – Residual solvents (Class 1–3), process impurities, extractables
  • Food & Beverages – Pesticide residues, flavor volatiles, contaminants (PAH, phthalates)
  • Environmental – VOCs in water/soil/air, BTEX, organochlorine pesticides
  • Forensic & Drug Detection – Volatile drugs, accelerants, poisons
  • Herbal & Essential Oils – Volatile profiling, adulteration detection
  • Unknown Identification – Mystery samples, off-odor analysis, polymer degradation

GC-MS Advantages & Limitations

Advantages:
  • Superior sensitivity & specificity for volatiles/semi-volatiles
  • Robust library matching for unknowns
  • Quantitative precision for regulatory compliance
Limitations:
  • Limited to volatile/thermally stable compounds (non-volatiles need derivatization)
  • Matrix interference in complex samples (mitigated by cleanup/headspace)
